Former living quarters of the Dalai Lama, its massive 1,000 room structure towers over Tibet. Continue on to visit the famous Barkhor Market where you may shop for Tibetan items. See one of Tibet's holiest shrines, revered 7th century Jokhang Temple, where pilgrims come to worship before the statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, lavishly enthroned in gold. In the evening, enjoy a memorable Tibetan dinner. | | Day 9 | Chongqing | Lhasa/Chongqing - AB, L, D This morning fly to Chongqing. Take an excursion through this mountainside city, where neighborhoods rise along the steep riverbank above the Yangtze. Visit the Stilwell Museum where memorabilia from the Flying Tigers, American pilots who volunteered to aid the Chinese during World War II is on view. See the Giant Pandas at the Chongqing Zoo if time allows. Board the Victoria Star to begin your Yangtze River cruise. | | Day 10 | Yangtze Cruise: Fengdu | Yangtze Cruise: Fengdu - AB, L, D At Fengdu, a shore excursion shows the new resettlement town on the south bank, a farmer's home and a local market. Nightly dining has been reserved at the elegant top deck a la carte dining room. *Alternate shore excursion may visit Wanzhou. | | Day 11 | Yangtze Cruise: Qutang Gorge/Small Gorges Excursion/ Wu Gorge/Xiling Gorge | Yangtze Cruise: Qutang Gorge/Small Gorges Excursion/ Wu Gorge/Xiling Gorge - AB, L, D Unforgettable scenery unfolds as you cruise through the first of the fabled Three Gorges: Qutang Gorge, hemmed by towering cliffs. At Wushan, a cruiser takes you up the Daning River to view its Small Gorges. Continue by sampan to the picturesque mini-gorges of the Ma Du River with its clear, swift water, rock formations, and monkeys and goats along the banks. Alternatively, your excursion may be on Shennong Stream with its impressive small gorges. Sail on from Wushan and pass through Wu Gorge, celebrated for its Twelve Peaks. Now cruise through Xiling Gorge, most scenic of all the gorges. Finally, sail through the Three Gorges ship lock. | | Day 12 | Yangtze Cruise: Xiling Gorge/San Dou Ping/Yichang to Shanghai | Yangtze Cruise: Xiling Gorge/San Dou Ping/Yichang to Shanghai* - AB, L, D At San Dou Ping, see the progress at the historic Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest hydroelectric project. Sail on to Yichang.
